The problem: a cloud kitchen laptop that stopped working after six weeks
Short answer: Oil aerosol (fine grease mist from fryers and woks) enters laptop vents, coats the heatsink fins and fan blades, traps heat, and eventually causes the machine to shut down from thermal protection. This is not standard liquid damage — the oil is non-corrosive but insulating, and it builds up silently until the fan can no longer spin. Most cloud kitchen laptop failures we see are entirely preventable with placement and cleaning habits.

Case 1: The Zomato-order laptop that throttled to a crawl
A Swiggy-and-Zomato cloud kitchen in Hyderabad sent us a Dell Inspiron 15 that was almost unusable — the order management software was freezing mid-shift, and the fan was making a grinding sound before going quiet. When we opened the bottom panel, the heatsink fins were completely blocked: every channel was packed with a brown, waxy mixture of cooking oil, dust, and lint. The CPU (central processor) was hitting 98°C — ten degrees above the safe cutoff — and throttling itself to 20% of rated speed to survive. The fan bearing had seized from oil ingress and could no longer spin freely.
We ultrasonically cleaned the board, replaced the fan, applied new thermal paste (the heat-conducting compound between the CPU and the metal heatsink), and returned the machine the same evening. Total cost: ₹2,800. The laptop had been sitting three feet from a wok station for six weeks.
Case 2: The charging circuit that shorted on an oily board
A second kitchen laptop — an HP Pavilion — arrived with no power at all: not throttled, not overheating, simply no longer powering on. The owner assumed a charger fault. When we opened it, the motherboard had a visible brown film across the surface near the charging IC (the chip that manages power from the adapter to the battery). A thin film of oil had become conductive enough under heat to bridge two adjacent pads on the charging chip, causing a short that took out the IC. We replaced the charging IC at chip level, cleaned the board ultrasonically, and fitted a fresh fan — ₹4,200 total. The alternative quote from another shop was a full motherboard replacement at ₹12,000.
The India angle: cloud kitchens run hotter than restaurants abroad
India's cloud kitchen boom accelerated after 2020, and most of these operations run in compact urban spaces with limited ventilation. A single 6x8 ft kitchen running two induction burners, a fryer, and an air fryer simultaneously saturates the air with oil aerosol far faster than a restaurant kitchen with proper exhaust hoods. In our experience, laptops placed on counters within two metres of active cooking stations show oil contamination in 4 to 6 weeks — not months. Monsoon season makes it worse because high humidity causes oil to deposit faster on cool surfaces like heatsinks and fan blades.
The pattern we see most is an owner who set up a cheap laptop to manage orders, placed it near the counter for convenience, and then brought it in after two months wondering why the laptop keeps shutting down automatically. Almost none of them connect the shutdowns to the kitchen environment.

Stop immediately if the laptop makes a grinding or whining fan sound, if it shuts down within 15 minutes of being switched on, or if the bottom panel is hot enough to be uncomfortable to touch. These are signs the thermal system has already failed. Continuing to run the machine risks a permanent board burn that cannot be repaired at component level.

A wall-mounted tablet with a keyboard, or a purpose-built POS terminal with a sealed chassis, will last years in the same environment that destroys a consumer laptop in weeks.
