What data is actually at risk on a ChromeOS Flex device?
Short answer: Very little — by design. ChromeOS Flex is built around cloud-first storage. Most files users think are "on the laptop" are actually in Google Drive and survive any local drive failure intact. The data that is genuinely at risk is limited to: files in the local Downloads folder that were never moved to Drive, PWA (progressive web app) cache and offline data, and any files saved with "Available offline" that have not been synced to Drive recently. Understanding this split before panicking about a failing ChromeOS Flex drive saves most customers a significant amount of worry.
How to assess and recover ChromeOS Flex data
Step 1: Check Google Drive first — the data is probably already safe
Before touching any hardware, sign into your Google account on any other device and open drive.google.com. If your documents, sheets, slides, and photos are there — and they almost certainly are — your data is safe regardless of what happens to the laptop's SSD. ChromeOS Flex defaults to storing everything in Drive, so the SSD failure is a hardware issue (covered by the data recovery service), not a data-loss event. Check the Recycle Bin in Drive as well — files deleted within the last 30 days are recoverable from there without any hardware work.
Step 2: Identify what was saved locally to Downloads
The local Downloads folder on ChromeOS Flex maps to the stateful partition, formatted as ext4 — the standard Linux file system. This partition is not automatically synced to Google Drive. Files downloaded from the internet, WhatsApp Web attachments opened but not saved to Drive, and local document drafts could be here. If the SSD is physically accessible (not soldered on your specific model), remove it, connect it via a USB enclosure to a Linux machine, and use ext4magic or PhotoRec to scan for recoverable files. Step 3: Recovery software limitations on ChromeOS Flex
Unlike Windows or macOS, you cannot install third-party recovery software directly on a ChromeOS Flex device — the OS runs in verified boot mode and the Linux container (if enabled) does not have raw block device access. The only practical software recovery path is removing the SSD and working from a Linux live environment on a separate machine. If the SSD is soldered (common on thin Chromebooks), this requires microsoldering desoldering work to access the NAND chips — a lab job.
Step 4: The India context — school and SME use of ChromeOS Flex
ChromeOS Flex adoption in Indian schools and small offices surged after Google's partnership with Indian OEMs for affordable devices. A common scenario we see: a school's Chromebooks are managed under Google Workspace for Education, the student's account stores everything in Drive, but the device itself has a failed SSD and shows only a recovery screen. In these cases, the data is entirely safe in the school's Google Workspace.
