Why brownouts are a bigger threat to laptops than power cuts

Short answer: A clean power cut causes your laptop to switch to battery instantly — no voltage stress, no damage. A brownout (where grid voltage sags to 160–190V rather than the standard 220–240V) forces the laptop charger to work harder to maintain its output, drawing higher input current and generating extra heat in the charger’s conversion components. India’s grid faces brownouts most heavily during summer (April–June, peak AC load) and in areas with poor feeder distribution. Repeated brownout cycles over months degrade the charger’s primary-side capacitors and the power management IC (PMC) — a key component that regulates current to the motherboard — before any single catastrophic event occurs.

Step 1: Identify your brownout risk level

Signs you are in a high-brownout zone: LED lights visibly dim for a few seconds and then recover, fans spin slower than usual, and your laptop charger brick runs noticeably hotter than on grid-stable days. Measure with a plug-in voltmeter (available online for ₹300–₹800): readings below 200V AC during daytime hours indicate a high-brownout environment. Most Indian state electricity boards specify 220V ±10% as acceptable tolerance — 198–242V. Below 198V is technically under-voltage. If your voltage is regularly 170–185V on summer afternoons, you are in a high-risk zone that warrants a UPS with AVR.

Step 2: Choose the right UPS for a laptop setup

The key specification is VA (volt-ampere) rating, not just the backup time on the box.
