Start here: the three-step check you can do right now
An Acer laptop that won't turn on is not automatically a motherboard problem. Most failures have simpler roots. Before spending money, run through these three checks in order.
Step 1: Hard reset (clears residual charge)
Modern laptops store charge in capacitors even after you power off. If a power surge, a failed Windows update, or a low-battery shutdown left the power circuit in an inconsistent state, the laptop will refuse to start. The fix: unplug the charger, remove the battery if it's a removable-battery model, and hold the power button for a full 30 seconds. This drains the capacitors completely. Then reconnect the charger only (battery still out if possible), and press power. - Needs a technician: BIOS reflash, DC jack repair (requires soldering), battery replacement on slim models, liquid damage cleaning, any motherboard fault. Signs it's the motherboard
These observations together suggest a motherboard power circuit fault rather than a battery or charger issue:
- No LED activity at all — not the charging LED, not the power LED, not the keyboard backlight — even with a confirmed-working charger plugged in.
- Faint sweet burning smell near the base of the laptop (capacitor or MOSFET failure).
- Visible discolouration or residue on the motherboard through the base vent slots.
- The laptop received a power surge (inverter cutover, lightning storm, UPS malfunction) shortly before the fault appeared.
