This story is for people who keep business files on one HP laptop, such as accountants, small firms and anyone without an IT department. It follows a typical case of an accountant in Jaipur whose laptop asked for a BitLocker key again and again after a BIOS update. You will see what HP has said, how to find your key, what to avoid doing in a panic, and when to hand the laptop to a technician.
Why would an HP BIOS update make a laptop ask for a BitLocker key?
Short answer: BitLocker (Windows' built-in drive lock) checks that the start-up chain has not changed. A BIOS update (the small program that starts the laptop before Windows loads) changes that chain on purpose. HP published an advisory that an early-April 2026 BIOS update for some HP business notebooks, desktops and workstations could leave Windows 11 in a BitLocker recovery loop. The 48-digit key gets you past it.
A typical case from Jaipur
This is a typical scenario drawn from the kind of case a repair bench sees. It is not a record of one real customer. An accountant, 45, in Jaipur works at a small accounts firm. The firm has no full-time IT person. One HP business laptop carries client ledgers and tax working files. After a routine update and a restart, the laptop shows the BitLocker recovery screen. She types the key. Windows opens, then asks for the key again at the next restart.
What is known about this fault
- HP published an advisory in May 2026. It says an early-April 2026 BIOS update for HP commercial notebooks, desktops and workstations can put Windows 11 into a BitLocker recovery loop.
- It covers Windows 11 versions 23H2, 24H2 and 25H2, according to the report on the advisory published on 26 May 2026. You can read that report at Windows Latest.
- It concerns HP commercial models. It does not say that every HP laptop is affected. Whether your exact model is named is something to check on HP's own advisory or support page.
The calm approach is to treat an HP BIOS update like any other BIOS update and prepare for it.
What the accountant did, step by step
1. Stop and keep the laptop on charge
She stopped restarting it. Repeated restarts do not help and can interrupt something that is still working.
2. Find the key properly
She looked in her Microsoft account, then in a work account, then on a printout the firm had made at set-up. The screen shows a Key ID (a label that tells you which key it wants); the entry must match. The wording in these menus can differ slightly between versions.
3. Check HP's advisory for the model
She searched HP's support site for her model name and the BIOS version shown on the laptop. HP's page is the place to learn whether a newer BIOS or a recommended step exists. We do not suggest installing random BIOS files from other websites. Our guide to updating a laptop BIOS safely shows the careful way.
4. Copy the files to safety once Windows opens
Before any further restart she copied the client folders to an external drive. Copy your important files before making further changes, because a loop can return.
What not to do
- Do not reset Windows or wipe the drive to stop the screen. It erases the files you need.
- Do not switch the laptop off while a BIOS update is running.
- Do not turn off Secure Boot or change other BIOS settings on a hunch; changing them can itself bring up a recovery screen.
- Do not download tools that promise to bypass BitLocker.
Before a BIOS update on any laptop with encryption, ask your IT person or technician whether to pause BitLocker first. Windows has a Suspend protection option for exactly this purpose, and the wording can differ slightly between versions.
Heat, power cuts and where the key is kept
Jaipur summers are hot and dusty, and a laptop that runs hot beside a window can shut down during an update. Put it on a hard surface, keep the vents clear and keep the charger connected. Short power cuts can happen in small offices, so a UPS (a small battery backup) is worth having for a desktop. Some small firms keep the BitLocker key only on the laptop itself, which defeats its purpose. Keep it elsewhere. If the laptop cannot be fixed locally, we accept laptops by courier from anywhere in India.
When to get help
Ask a technician if you see any of these.
- The recovery screen returns at every restart, even after you enter the right key.
- You have no key and the laptop holds client files.
- A BIOS update stopped partway because of a power cut.
- The laptop will not reach Windows at all.

A note from the LRW Engineer Team
Treat a BIOS update as a planned job, not a click on a notification. Save the recovery key in two places, copy the files you cannot lose, and run the update on charger power at a calm time of day. If a recovery loop does appear, stop early and ask. Early questions save the drive.
