Picture a small shop or office on SP Road, Secunderabad. It is opening time, customers are waiting, and the billing computer stays black when you press the power button. You cannot print an invoice and you are worried about the stock and accounts data inside. This post gives you a calm order of checks that need no tools, tells you which signs to report to a technician, and explains how to protect your billing data so the day's work is not lost.
What should I check first when the billing PC will not start?
Short answer: check the power chain from the wall to the PC, then the monitor, then the sounds and lights. A loose cable, a switched-off extension board or a monitor on the wrong input accounts for many 'dead PC' calls. If all three look fine and the PC still shows no life, stop pressing buttons and ask a technician to look, so your billing data stays safe.
The scenario below is a typical one for a small shop, not a real customer.
Which checks are safe to do myself?
- Wall socket and extension board. Plug a phone charger or a lamp into the same socket to see that it has power. Check the board's switch and its fuse.
- Power cable. Press the cable firmly into the back of the PC. Try a second cable if you have one.
- Rear power switch. Many desktops have a small switch on the power supply (the box that feeds electricity to the PC). Make sure it is set to on, usually marked with a line.
- Monitor. A PC can run while the screen stays black. Check the monitor's power light, the video cable at both ends, and the input setting (HDMI, VGA or DisplayPort).
- Lights and fans. Note whether any light comes on, whether fans spin, and whether the fans start and stop.
- Beeps. Some PCs beep in a pattern when something is wrong. Count the beeps and note them down. The meaning differs by maker, so a technician will match them to your board.
- Unplug extras. Remove pen drives, printers and cards, then try once more.
If you smell burning, see sparks or hear a loud pop, switch off at the wall and do not try again. A damaged power supply can harm the board and the drive.
What do the signs usually mean?
Why does SP Road need extra care?
Offices and shops on SP Road are part of central Secunderabad, where Clock Tower and MGBS form the transit hub. A shop with a single billing PC has no spare, so downtime can cost the day's sales. Hyderabad's voltage dips during power cuts are hard on desktops, and a power supply that is already weak can fail soon after one. A basic surge-protected extension board and a UPS (a battery box that keeps the PC on through short cuts) give the PC a safer supply, so consider one for the billing counter.
Back up your billing data at the close of each day, to a pen drive or an external drive kept away from the PC. If your billing software has an export or backup option, use it; the menu name differs by software. Without a recent copy, a failed drive can cost you records that are hard to rebuild.
If the drive makes clicking sounds or the PC reports a missing disk, switch off and stop using it. Further use can make data recovery harder.
How does Laptop Repair World help on SP Road?
Our store is on MG Road, opposite Paradise Circle, so a unit can be carried in. We also visit shops and offices in Secunderabad. You get a written quotation listing parts, labour, GST and the visit fee before any work. If testing finds another fault, a revised quotation is approved before any further paid work. We record the condition, serial number and accessories when we collect a unit, name each part as original, compatible or refurbished with its own warranty, show you the repaired function at handover, and follow up afterwards. Same-day completion is possible for eligible jobs when the part is on hand and a technician is free. See our desktop repair in Secunderabad page for details, or read about slow office desktops.
The shop that could not open its counter
A shop owner presses the power button at opening time and nothing happens. A neighbour's phone charger works in the same socket, so the wall is fine. The extension board's fuse has tripped, and a second board brings the PC to life, but the monitor stays black until the input is switched from VGA to HDMI. Some time is lost, no technician is needed, and the owner then buys a surge-protected board and starts a daily backup.

A note from the LRW Engineer Team
Write down what you saw and heard before you call: which lights, how many beeps, and whether the screen stayed black. Do not reinstall Windows or format the drive to 'fix' it, because that erases your billing records. Tell the technician your data matters first.
