Step 1: Battery health — the most important check
On Windows, run powercfg /batteryreport in Command Prompt (a Windows utility that generates a battery health report). Look for Design Capacity vs Full Charge Capacity. If Full Charge Capacity is below 80% of Design Capacity, the battery requires replacement soon — factor ₹1,200–₹4,500 into your buying price. On MacBook, go to About This Mac > System Information > Power > Cycle Count. Above 500 cycles means the battery is past its midpoint; above 800 cycles, a replacement is needed before or shortly after purchase. Never buy a refurbished laptop without checking battery health — it is the most expensive hidden cost.
Step 2: SSD / HDD health — catching silent failures
Download CrystalDiskInfo (free Windows tool) and check the S.M.A.R.T. data (Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology — built-in drive health data) for the SSD or HDD. Any warning or failure status is a red flag. For SSDs, check Total Bytes Written: a 256GB SSD that has written over 300TB is near its endurance limit. For HDDs (older refurbished units may still have hard drives), any reallocated sectors or seek error rate warnings mean imminent failure. A healthy SSD shows all green indicators and low Total Bytes Written relative to drive size.
Step 3: Physical inspection — hinge, keyboard, and liquid damage
Open and close the laptop lid 10 times at different speeds. Stiff spots or looseness in the middle of the range indicate hinge wear. Hinges that crack or snap later in a refurbished laptop are frequently traced to pre-existing wear masked by cosmetic cleaning. Check keyboard keys individually — press every key, including function keys and numpad if present. Sticky, mushy, or non-responsive keys often indicate prior liquid exposure. Look for the liquid damage indicator sticker inside the battery compartment or near the charging port: a pink or red stripe means liquid entered the chassis at some point.
Step 4: The India angle — grey market vs OEM certified
India’s refurbished laptop market has a significant grey market segment: units sourced from corporate bulk upgrades, US/EU returns, or decommissioned office fleets, cleaned cosmetically and resold without proper diagnostic testing. These often arrive with 60–70% battery health, replaced non-original chargers, and potential hidden water damage from previous office environments. OEM certified programs (HP Renew, Dell Certified Refurbished, Apple CPO) conduct standardised multi-point testing, replace consumables (battery, charger), and carry a proper 1-year warranty. They cost ₹5,000–₹10,000 more than grey market equivalents but avoid the risk of immediate repair costs.
