How to choose a Tally laptop in India
Step 1: Processor and RAM — the IRP portal changes the equation
Tally Prime (the current version as of 2026) is not resource-intensive by itself. A Core i3 with 4GB RAM runs it fine in isolation. The complication is GST e-invoicing: the IRP portal (Invoice Registration Portal) — the government’s system for generating e-invoices with IRN (Invoice Reference Number) and QR codes — runs in a web browser. Chrome or Edge with the IRP portal open, Tally running, antivirus scanning in the background, and email or WhatsApp Web open simultaneously easily consumes 6–7GB RAM. Buy 8GB RAM as the minimum for any new Tally machine.

Step 2: Storage — SSD is non-negotiable, HDD is risky
Tally stores its data in a proprietary format on local disk by default. A spinning HDD (hard disk drive) is a mechanical component with moving parts that fails over time — and a sudden HDD failure mid-transaction means corrupted Tally data. An SSD (Solid State Drive) has no moving parts, boots faster, and is far less fragile for office use. Every laptop bought for Tally use in 2026 should have an SSD as the primary drive. A 256GB SSD is sufficient for Tally data alone; if you also store invoices, PDFs, and emails on the same machine, 512GB is the safer choice.

Step 4: The India angle — power cuts and data integrity
