Many of us have an older Windows 10 computer at home that holds a lifetime of papers: pension documents, bank statements, family photos and letters. If you have recently been told that you must move to Windows 11, this post is for you. Here is a calm, step-by-step way to copy everything safely onto a drive first, and to decide whether you need to move at all.
How do I back up my Windows 10 files before moving to Windows 11?
Short answer: Buy or borrow an external hard drive or pen drive larger than your files, plug it in, and copy your Documents, Desktop, Downloads, Pictures and Videos folders to it. Then open two or three files from the drive to be sure they work. Only after that should you try any change to Windows. You do not need to hurry, because Windows 10 support has been extended.
Do I have to move to Windows 11 right now?
No. Microsoft has extended Extended Security Updates (ESU, a programme that keeps sending important security fixes after normal support ends) for consumer Windows 10 up to 12 October 2027. This was reported on 25 June 2026 and replaces the earlier date of 13 October 2026. The extension is for personal devices only, not for computers managed by an office or school. PCs that are enrolled get the updates automatically. The details are on Microsoft's Extended Security Updates page.
So there is no emergency. Use the extra time to copy your files carefully, and to find out whether your computer can run Windows 11 at all.
Can my computer run Windows 11?
Open Settings, then Update and Security, then Windows Update. If your PC is eligible, Windows says so. If it is not, it will say that the PC does not meet the requirements. The wording can differ slightly between versions. Older machines often fail because of the chip or the security chip inside, and that is normal, not a fault. If your PC is not eligible, it can keep running Windows 10 for the time being. Whichever way it turns out, make the backup first.
What to copy, in plain words

The copy, step by step
- Plug the external drive into a USB port. A window may open on its own.
- Open File Explorer (the yellow folder icon on the taskbar) and click This PC.
- Double-click your user folder, then select Documents, Desktop, Downloads, Pictures and Videos.
- Right-click, choose Copy, open the external drive, make a new folder named Backup with today's date, and choose Paste.
- Wait until the progress bar disappears. Big photo folders may need an hour.
- Open a few photos and documents straight from the drive.
- Right-click the drive in This PC and choose Eject before you pull it out.
Never remove the drive while the progress bar is still moving. This can damage both the files and the drive.

Power cuts, old machines and damp weather
Power cuts and voltage dips are the main hazard when copying large folders or updating Windows, because a computer that loses power in the middle of a copy can leave half-finished files. A desktop should be plugged into a UPS (a small battery backup), and a laptop should stay on its charger. An older machine may have been through years of dust and heat, so if the computer feels slow, loud or hot, copy your files first and ask for a check. In the monsoon months, keep the backup drive in a dry box, away from damp walls.
When to get help
- The copy stops with an error, or a folder will not open.
- The computer makes clicking or grinding sounds from the hard drive.
- You are not sure which folders hold your photos or papers.
- You have already tried an upgrade or reset and files seem to be missing.
Our data recovery service starts with a diagnosis and an honest answer on what can be saved. In Hyderabad we offer a doorstep service, and the charge is ₹149 doorstep visit fee, waived when you approve laptop repair with us. If you are elsewhere in India, we accept laptops by courier. If the drive makes clicking sounds, switch the computer off and stop copying, because every extra attempt can make recovery harder. The quote comes after diagnosis and is shared for your approval before any work.
A note from the LRW Engineer Team
Ask a family member or neighbour to sit with you for the first copy, and do it slowly. After the copy is made, keep the drive in a safe place and write the date on a label. There is no rush to upgrade, and the files you saved will go with you to whichever computer you use next.
