A curious seven-year-old, a UEFI settings screen, and a laptop that stopped booting
Short answer: An Asus VivoBook 15 arrived presenting a UEFI Supervisor Password prompt on every boot. The owner’s seven-year-old had been playing with the laptop, discovered the BIOS settings screen by pressing F2 during startup, and found the “Set Supervisor Password” menu. The child entered a password — then forgot it. The laptop refused to boot to Windows until the password was entered. On the bench: the Supervisor Password was cleared using the Asus platform key bypass method available for this firmware version. Total time: 25 minutes. Cost: ₹2,200. Data was untouched throughout.
Understanding the BIOS password types
Supervisor Password vs. Power-On Password vs. Hard Drive Password
Most laptops have three distinct password mechanisms in UEFI. The Supervisor Password controls access to the UEFI settings screen itself. The Power-On Password requires entry before the laptop will boot at all. The Hard Drive Password (also called ATA security) is stored in the drive’s firmware and encrypts the drive at hardware level. A child exploring UEFI most commonly sets the Supervisor Password — which on some Asus models is also configured to require entry before Windows boots. This is the most benign of the three, as the SSD data is not encrypted and a bench unlock restores full access in one session.
Why CMOS reset does not work on modern Asus laptops
Older BIOS implementations stored all settings, including passwords, in the CMOS (a small battery-powered memory area that retains settings when the laptop is off). Removing the CMOS battery for 30 seconds would clear everything including the password. Modern UEFI implementations on Asus VivoBook and ZenBook models from 2019 onward store the Supervisor Password in a dedicated non-volatile flash chip that is separate from the CMOS area and is not cleared by a battery removal. Internet guides that suggest “remove the CMOS battery” for these models are providing advice for 10-year-old hardware. The unlock process
The Asus platform key bypass uses a specific USB boot sequence and a hash-based key generated from the machine’s serial number to present a recovery credential to the UEFI. This is an official mechanism present in Asus’s service documentation — not a hack. Once accepted, the Supervisor Password is cleared and the UEFI boots normally. The process was completed in 25 minutes. The owner was advised to use a Windows Standard (limited) account for the child’s sessions — standard accounts cannot access UEFI settings from within Windows, and pressing F2 during startup boots to a UEFI locked by the parent’s Windows credentials. Prevention: locking children out of BIOS properly
The correct child-safe laptop setup is: a separate Windows Standard user account for the child (cannot access system settings or BIOS tools), Secure Boot enabled (prevents most boot-device changes), and a single Supervisor Password set by the parent (not the child). Write the password down and store it separately. A BIOS password set by the parent and unknown to the child is the appropriate lock; a BIOS password set by the child and unknown to everyone is the problem this case illustrates.

Forgotten BIOS passwords set during a laptop’s business life, second-hand laptops with previous-owner BIOS locks, and office machines set up with passwords that were never documented are all versions of the same problem.
