The real problem with Apple M5 Mac SSD recovery
Short answer: On any Apple Silicon Mac — M1 through M5 — the SSD storage is not a removable module. It is NAND flash memory soldered directly onto the logic board alongside the CPU and RAM in Apple's Unified Memory Architecture. When the Mac stops working, you cannot simply remove the drive and read it on another machine. Recovery requires either getting the board functional enough to image via DFU mode, or specialist chip-level NAND extraction — both of which are expensive and carry risk. Why the usual recovery tricks do not work on Apple Silicon
Step 1: Understand the architecture difference
On older Intel MacBooks (pre-2020), Apple used a standard T2 security chip but still had an identifiable NVMe SSD module in an M.2-style slot. Technicians could, in specific scenarios, desolder and read the NAND. From M1 onward, Apple redesigned the entire package. The SSD controller, NAND flash, CPU, GPU, and RAM all share the same die package — called the SoC (System on a Chip). There is no standalone SSD module to remove. Plugging an M5 Mac's storage into a USB enclosure is architecturally impossible.
Step 2: What DFU mode can actually do
Apple's DFU (Device Firmware Update) mode — the emergency restore mode accessed by holding specific key combinations while connecting to another Mac via USB-C — is the first recovery path. If the logic board is functional enough to enumerate over USB, another Mac running Apple Configurator 2 can sometimes image the NAND through Apple's own firmware recovery channel. This is not a universal data-recovery tool — it primarily restores the OS — but some board-level labs in India have developed workflows around it to extract user partitions when the board responds partially. Step 3: Chip-off NAND — the last resort
When the board does not power on at all, the only remaining technical path is physical NAND chip removal under a microscope, followed by direct chip reading. This is a cleanroom-adjacent procedure: the NAND package must be desoldered with hot-air or laser equipment, read on specialist hardware, and the proprietary Apple encryption layers must be addressed. Apple's Secure Enclave (the hardware key vault on the M-series SoC) encrypts all user data; without the device's UID key — which is fused into the chip itself — even a successful chip-off extraction produces encrypted data that cannot be decrypted without Apple's cooperation or a hardware key exploit. In practice, chip-off recovery on M-series Macs has a very low success rate for accessing user files in encrypted form. Costs in India range from ₹25,000–₹60,000 or more, with no guarantee.
Step 4: The India angle — what labs here can realistically offer
In India, only a handful of board-level labs have the equipment for M-series NAND work. Most general data recovery services that advertise "Mac SSD recovery" are actually offering Intel-era techniques that simply do not apply to M1 through M5 machines. Before spending anything, ask explicitly: "Is this an Apple Silicon Mac? Do you have experience with M-series board-level extraction?" A lab that pauses or deflects at that question is not equipped for this work.
