Is an AMC or annual care pack worth it for Indian businesses?
Short answer: For a laptop used daily in an SME or work-from-home setting, an AMC (Annual Maintenance Contract, also called an annual service care pack) almost always pays for itself if the laptop is more than 2 years old. A battery replacement alone (₹1,500–₹3,500) plus one fan clean (₹600–₹800) adds up to the annual plan cost. The AMC then covers everything else for the rest of the year at no extra labour charge.
The 3-year cost model for an Indian SME laptop
Year 1 — new laptop, reactive costs are low
A laptop in its first year under manufacturer warranty needs minimal third-party service. Software issues can usually be resolved without a physical visit. Reactive cost in year 1: ₹0–₹1,500 (maybe one OS tune-up). AMC would cost ₹2,999 — so for year 1 alone, per-repair wins. Most SMEs do not need an AMC for brand-new laptops.
Year 2–3 — the inflection point
India’s conditions (heat, dust, humidity, power instability) mean most laptops develop at least two service needs per year between their second and fourth year. Typical year-2 or year-3 pattern: fan cleaning (₹600–₹800), OS tune-up or reinstall (₹500–₹1,500), and one hardware repair — usually battery (₹1,500–₹3,500) or keyboard (₹1,500–₹3,000). Combined reactive cost: ₹3,500–₹8,500. An AMC at ₹2,999 is clearly cheaper. Plus: the AMC includes free doorstep pickup and drop, so there is no travel time cost to the business — relevant for a 5-person SME where the owner is also managing operations. See our Annual Service Care Pack page for what is included.
Year 4 and beyond — the case strengthens
A laptop past 3 years in heavy Indian use typically needs a battery replacement, one motherboard or chip-level event (power IC from a surge, or a sensor failure), and continued fan maintenance. Per-repair reactive cost in year 4 can easily reach ₹5,000–₹12,000. An AMC at ₹2,999 covers labour for all of these. The parts cost (battery cells, chip components) is charged at actual distributor cost — no markup — under the AMC model.
| Scenario | 3-Year Per-Repair Cost (₹) | 3-Year AMC Cost (₹) |
|---|---|---|
| Light use, no failures | 1,500 – 3,000 | 8,997 |
| Typical SME laptop (2 repairs/yr) | 8,000 – 15,000 | 8,997 |
| Heavy use (3+ repairs/yr) | 15,000 – 30,000 | 8,997 |
| MacBook typical SME | 12,000 – 25,000 | 10,497 |
AMC costs are 3×₹2,999 (Windows) or 3×₹3,499 (MacBook). Parts are charged at actual cost under both models.
The India angle — SME usage profile
Indian SMEs have two characteristics that make reactive repair expensive: most repairs happen at the worst possible time (deadline crunch, client meeting day), meaning the business absorbs the downtime cost too; and most SME owners manage their own laptop repairs ad hoc, losing 2–4 hours per incident to diagnosis, shop visits, and follow-up. An AMC with doorstep service converts that variable cost into a flat predictable annual line item — which also helps with accounting. Also see our guide on OS reinstall costs — a service that is included in the AMC and often needed once every 1–2 years for business laptops.
When to call a repair service — and what it costs
Who the AMC is for
The AMC is a good fit when: you use the laptop 6+ hours daily, the laptop is more than 18 months old, you cannot afford downtime, or you manage multiple laptops in a small team. It is not the right choice for: a laptop under 1 year old still under OEM warranty, a laptop used only occasionally (under 3 hours/day), or a laptop with severe physical damage that needs a major hardware spend regardless of the plan.
A note from the LRW Engineer Team
The framing that works best for most SME owners: the AMC is not a service plan — it is downtime insurance. The ₹2,999/year is not the cost of repairs. It is the cost of having a technician respond when something breaks, without a separate billing event, without negotiation, and without a second visit charge. For businesses where every day the laptop is unavailable costs ₹500–₹2,000 in lost productivity, that is an easy calculation.
