AIO PC screen cracked — repair or replace the whole unit?
Short answer: If the AIO (All-in-One PC — a desktop where the computer and display are integrated into a single enclosure behind the screen) is under five years old and the processor and motherboard are working normally, replacing the screen is almost always the right financial decision. Screen replacement costs ₹4,500–₹14,000 in India depending on panel size and touch capability; a new entry-level AIO costs ₹40,000–₹60,000. The math is straightforward. The exception: very old machines with Celeron processors where additional repairs are already pending.
How to decide: repair vs. replace your AIO screen
Step 1: Confirm the screen is the only fault
Connect the AIO to an external monitor via HDMI or DisplayPort (the video output port, if your model has one). If Windows loads normally on the external display, the motherboard, GPU, and RAM are fine — you have a clean screen-fault case. If the external monitor also shows nothing, the problem is the GPU or motherboard, and the decision becomes more complex. Most HP Pavilion AIO, Dell Inspiron AIO 24/27, and Lenovo IdeaCentre AIO models have an HDMI output port that makes this test straightforward.
Step 2: Identify the panel type
AIO screens fall into three categories that determine cost. A standard IPS LCD panel (In-Plane Switching — a screen technology offering wide viewing angles and accurate colour) in FHD (1920×1080) is the most common and cheapest to replace: ₹3,500–₹6,000 for the panel. A touch display assembly (IPS panel with a bonded digitizer layer that detects finger input) costs ₹7,000–₹12,000 because the digitizer is fused to the panel. An iMac display uses a precision IPS or Retina panel bonded to a glass front — the glass and panel are typically replaced together, costing ₹18,000–₹35,000 at a specialist workshop. Labour adds ₹1,500–₹2,500 for any of these.
Step 3: The five-year rule
An AIO that is over six years old and running an Intel 7th/8th gen or older Core-i processor is approaching end-of-useful-life in terms of software support. Microsoft's Windows 11 TPM 2.0 requirement already excludes many pre-2018 systems from free upgrades. Spending ₹8,000 on a screen for a machine that will be ineligible for Windows updates in two years is a different calculation from spending the same on a 2021-vintage Acer Aspire AIO. For machines under three years old, repair is always the better call. For machines between three and six years old, check whether the processor is Intel 12th gen or AMD Ryzen 5000 series or newer — these will remain supported for several more years.
Step 4: The India angle — voltage spikes and display inverters
A subset of AIO screen failures in India are not physical cracks — they are backlight failures (the LED strip behind the LCD that provides illumination, controlled by an inverter circuit on the display board). This presents as a completely black screen even though the image is visible faintly when a torch is shone at the panel at an angle. Backlight failures on Indian-market AIOs often trace to voltage irregularities damaging the display board's power circuit. The repair is cheaper than a full panel swap — display board replacement typically costs ₹1,800–₹3,500. Our AIO PC common faults guide covers this and other non-screen faults. When to call a repair service (and what it costs in India)
When DIY ends
AIO screen disassembly is not a beginner task — the display is held by a combination of clips, adhesive strips, and proprietary screws that vary by model. The eDP (display data) cable and Wi-Fi antenna cables are routed behind the panel and can be damaged if pulled without following the model-specific service manual. Leave this to a technician.
Typical AIO screen replacement costs in India
HP Pavilion 24 non-touch FHD: ₹5,500–₹8,000 including labour. Dell Inspiron AIO 24 touch: ₹9,000–₹13,000. Lenovo IdeaCentre AIO 27 FHD: ₹7,000–₹10,000. iMac 24 M1/M2 (full display assembly): ₹20,000–₹35,000. Backlight board replacement (no panel swap needed): ₹2,000–₹4,000.
A note from the LRW Engineer Team
The most common error on AIO screen calls is customers ordering a replacement panel from an online marketplace without confirming the exact panel part number for their serial number. Two HP Pavilion 24 units from different production batches can have panels from two different manufacturers with different connectors. Always get the panel part confirmed by a technician against the serial before ordering. The desktop repair service handles AIO screens across HP, Dell, Lenovo, Acer, and Apple iMac.
