My Acer laptop is acting up after a Windows update. What should I check?
Short answer: Restart the laptop twice, then open Settings, Windows Update, Update history to see what installed. Install any waiting updates, update the Acer, Wi-Fi and graphics drivers, and test again. If the problem began right after one update, uninstall that update. Use Reset this PC only as a last step, after backing up your files.
What did Microsoft release in October 2026?
BleepingComputer and Windows Report reported that Microsoft released its October 2026 Patch Tuesday cumulative updates on 13 October 2026. These included KB5127648, which covers Windows 11 versions 26H2, 25H2 and 24H2, with separate updates for other versions. The reports cited fixes such as File Explorer crashes in some business set-ups, audio and mouse stutter in games, and fingerprint sign-in after a cold start. Both describe general Windows changes, not an Acer fault.
That matters for how you read your own symptoms. Updates change many parts of Windows at once, so a laptop can feel different for a day. On 13 October 2026 Windows 11 24H2 Home and Pro also stopped receiving updates, so an Acer on that version should move to 25H2 or 26H2 through Windows Update. Microsoft's release health page lists known issues with their status; check it today, because the status can change.
What should I check, in order?
1. Restart twice
Choose Restart, not Shut down. Windows Fast Startup can keep half-finished changes. Restart again once the first restart finishes.
2. Look at the update history
Go to Settings, Windows Update, Update history. Note any update marked Failed and what installed on the day the problem began. The wording can differ slightly between versions.
3. Install everything that is waiting
Click Check for updates and let it finish, including optional driver updates under Advanced options. Keep the charger plugged in and do not close the lid during the install.
4. Update the drivers
Drivers are small programs that let Windows talk to hardware. For an Acer, visit Acer's support site, enter your serial number or model, and download the latest Wi-Fi, graphics and touchpad drivers. Graphics makers such as Intel, AMD and NVIDIA also publish their own.
5. Test in safe conditions
Check whether the problem appears in Safe Mode or on a second user account. If it disappears, an app or driver is the cause, not Windows itself.
When should I uninstall the update?
Only when the problem began right after it and is serious. In Update history, choose Uninstall updates, select the latest one and confirm. Windows may install it again later; you can pause updates for a few days under Windows Update while you wait for a fix. Do not delay security updates for long. They close real gaps in Windows.

Power cuts and patchy broadband during Windows updates
