The single biggest factor in data recovery cost is whether your failure is logical (the drive hardware works but data is inaccessible through software) or physical (something inside the drive is mechanically or electrically broken). These two categories require completely different tools, different expertise, and different price points.

Data is inaccessible because the file system is corrupted, a partition table is overwritten, files were accidentally deleted, or the drive was reformatted. Most people assume SSDs are “more reliable” and therefore easier and cheaper to recover data from. In practice, SSD data recovery is often more expensive and less predictable than HDD recovery for three structural reasons.
1. TRIM erases data immediately. On a traditional spinning HDD, deleting a file only marks the file system entry as removed — the actual sectors are untouched until overwritten. On an SSD running TRIM (which almost all modern Windows 10/11 laptops do), the drive actively erases those blocks in the background. The window for logical recovery on a TRIM-enabled SSD narrows to hours or days, not weeks.
2. No standardised interface below the controller. When an SSD controller fails, the NAND flash chips underneath use vendor-proprietary scrambling and ECC schemes. Chip-off recovery means reading raw NAND data and then reverse-engineering the scrambling algorithm for that specific controller — a job that requires specialist firmware for each chip family. This is why NVMe SSD chip-off recovery costs ₹12,000–22,000.
3. Wear levelling spreads data across the entire flash array. A single file may be physically fragmented across hundreds of NAND die in unpredictable patterns. Even after chip-off read succeeds, reconstruction software must reassemble the correct page order. This is computationally intensive and time-consuming.
What to do right now if you deleted files from an SSD: Power off the laptop immediately. Do not restart, do not run any application, do not save anything to the drive. Every write operation after deletion reduces the chance of recovery. Bring or ship the drive to us as fast as possible. Time is the main variable in SSD logical recovery.
MacBook encrypted storage requires model-specific assessment
From 2018 onwards (T2 chip MacBooks) and all M1/M2/M3/M4 Apple Silicon models, the SSD storage is not a removable module — it is soldered NAND chips wired through the T2 co-processor (on Intel models) or directly integrated into the Apple Silicon SoC (on M-series models). The T2 chip and Apple Silicon both act as encryption controllers using keys that are unique to that chip and cannot be exported.
This creates a compounding challenge for recovery:

Liquid damage to a laptop is one of the most time-sensitive repair scenarios we handle, and data recovery from a liquid-exposed drive follows a different path than a dry failure. The key insight: the liquid itself rarely destroys data immediately — corrosion does, and corrosion is a process that accelerates with time.
When liquid reaches a laptop, it may touch the drive in two ways: the drive’s PCB (the controller board on the underside of an HDD or the NAND/controller area of an SSD), or in extreme cases, inside the drive casing (virtually only happens to HDDs with a contaminated breather filter or a hard drop that opened a seam). Water on the PCB causes shorts when power is applied but rarely destroys the data platters.
