Why is my laptop fingerprint reader not working?
Short answer: The fingerprint reader (also called a biometric sensor) stops working for two broad reasons — software faults (driver corruption, Windows Hello misconfiguration) or hardware faults (damaged sensor, loose ribbon cable). Software fixes are free. Hardware replacement costs ₹800–₹3,500 in India. Always diagnose before replacing.
How to diagnose a fingerprint reader fault
Step 1: Check Device Manager
Press Windows + X and open Device Manager. Expand "Biometric devices" — if your fingerprint reader appears with a yellow warning triangle, it is present but has a driver fault. Right-click and choose "Update driver" — Windows will search online automatically. If the device is absent entirely, either the sensor has failed or its internal connector has come loose. On ThinkPads, the fingerprint key is embedded in the keyboard ribbon — a loose keyboard cable can cause the sensor to disappear from Device Manager entirely without the keyboard itself having any other problems.
Step 2: Re-enrol your fingerprints
Go to Settings → Accounts → Sign-in Options → Windows Hello Fingerprint. Remove all stored fingerprints and re-add them. Sensors accumulate grease and moisture over time, degrading the optical or capacitive surface. Wiping the sensor with a slightly damp microfibre cloth and re-enrolling fixes a surprisingly large share of "stopped working" complaints. On MacBooks, the Touch ID button is embedded in the power button — re-enrol via System Settings → Touch ID & Password. Step 3: Identify sensor location and type
Fingerprint sensors sit in one of three places: integrated into the power button (common on modern HP, Dell, Asus, and Apple laptops), as a standalone pad on the palmrest, or built into a key on the keyboard (Lenovo ThinkPad). The location determines the repair complexity and cost. A standalone palmrest sensor is usually the easiest to replace. A sensor fused to the power button may require motherboard-level work on some models. A keyboard-integrated sensor means a keyboard replacement — explore our keyboard service page for current pricing.
Step 4: The India angle — humidity and sweat
India's climate — particularly during June to September — means palms are often damp when interacting with the sensor. Capacitive fingerprint sensors (most common type) read skin conductance patterns; moisture degrades this signal and can cause moisture to seep under the sensor surface. Chronic humidity exposure can permanently degrade the sensor's optical coating within 12–18 months on budget models. Using a PIN during monsoon months and switching to fingerprint in drier seasons extends sensor lifespan noticeably.

When to stop DIY and call
Stop troubleshooting yourself if: the device is absent from Device Manager after a fresh Windows reinstall, the sensor is visibly cracked or discoloured, or your laptop took a liquid spill near the sensor area. At that point, the fault is hardware and requires physical access.
Typical repair cost
Driver fix (DIY): free. Connector reseat (loose cable): ₹300–₹600 labour. Standalone sensor module replacement: ₹800–₹2,000. Power-button-integrated sensor: ₹1,500–₹3,000. Keyboard with built-in fingerprint key (ThinkPad): ₹1,800–₹3,500 (keyboard replacement includes sensor). All prices are for OEM-compatible parts — compatible third-party sensors sometimes require Windows Hello re-pairing and may not work on every BIOS version.
A note from the LRW Engineer Team
We see this failure most often after Windows Updates and after liquid spills near the keyboard deck. The post-update failures are almost always driver issues — fixable in minutes. Post-spill failures are almost always hardware. One thing worth knowing: Windows Hello's fingerprint data is stored in a TPM (Trusted Platform Module) chip, not in the sensor itself, so a sensor replacement does not compromise your biometric data — you simply re-enrol.
