Why is your laptop microphone not working?
Short answer: In India's WFH-heavy environment, the microphone not working on Zoom or Teams is almost always a software issue — privacy settings blocking mic access, wrong input device selected, or an outdated audio driver. Hardware mic failures are relatively rare but do happen after liquid spills or physical shocks. Work through the software fixes first — they resolve most cases without any repair cost.
How to fix laptop microphone not working
Step 1: Check Windows 11 microphone privacy settings
This is the most commonly missed step. Go to Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone. Confirm that Microphone access is toggled On at the top. Below that, confirm Let apps access your microphone is also On. Scroll down and ensure the specific app you are using (Microsoft Teams, Zoom, Google Chrome for Meet) is listed and toggled On. If the app is not listed, it has not been used on this system yet — open the app and Windows will prompt for permission. Many users in India reinstall Windows 11 without enabling these permissions, and every video call app then silently records nothing.
Step 2: Set the correct default recording device
Right-click the speaker icon in the taskbar and choose Sound settings. Under Input, confirm the correct device is selected — on most laptops it should be Microphone Array (Realtek) or similar. If you see a headset or Bluetooth device listed and selected, that is why the built-in mic is not working — Windows switched input to the external device. Select the internal microphone and test using the volume meter next to it (it should show green bars when you speak). In Zoom specifically, go to Settings → Audio and manually select the laptop's built-in mic from the dropdown — Zoom sometimes overrides Windows defaults.
Step 3: Update or reinstall the audio driver
Open Device Manager (right-click Start → Device Manager). Expand Audio inputs and outputs. Right-click the microphone entry and choose Uninstall device, then restart Windows — it will reinstall the driver automatically. If the issue persists, download the latest audio driver from the OEM support page for your model. Most HP, Dell, Lenovo, and Asus laptops use Realtek HD Audio — the driver is available from the laptop manufacturer's support site, not directly from Realtek's website, because OEM versions have additional enhancements for the microphone array.
Step 4: The India angle — liquid damage and microphone position
Laptop microphones in India face two unique threats: tea and coffee spills (the microphone is often in the keyboard area — the top left corner or the bezel near the webcam), and extreme humidity during the monsoon season causing corrosion on the microphone's solder pads. If the microphone stopped working suddenly after a spill, do not attempt to clean it with water — contact our liquid damage repair service immediately. For a microphone that gradually degraded over months in coastal cities, it may be corrosion on the microphone module — a component that costs ₹200–₹600 to replace. When to call a laptop repair service
When DIY ends
Stop and seek professional help if: the microphone does not show any input level in Windows Voice Recorder after all driver fixes, Device Manager shows no microphone device at all, or the laptop was exposed to liquid before the issue started.
Typical cost in India
Internal microphone module replacement: ₹500–₹1,500. Liquid damage assessment + microphone repair: ₹1,000–₹3,000. Doorstep diagnosis: ₹149, No Fix No Fee.
A note from the LRW Engineer Team
The most common microphone hardware fault we see is a snapped flex cable connecting the microphone module to the motherboard — happens frequently on hinges that open past 180 degrees (common on convertible and 360-degree laptops). The cable flex-fractures invisibly. Only visible under magnification — and the fix requires disassembly and cable replacement, not a driver update.
