Is the laptop GST refundable if you buy it for business?
Short answer: Yes, if your business is GST-registered, you can claim Input Tax Credit (ITC — the mechanism that lets a GST-registered business recover the GST it paid on business purchases) on a laptop bought for business use. The GST rate on laptops and notebooks in India is 18% under HSN code 8471 (Automatic Data Processing Machines). On a ₹80,000 laptop, the tax portion is approximately ₹12,203 — fully recoverable as ITC against your GST output liability if all conditions are met.
How to claim GST ITC on a laptop purchase — 4 steps
Step 1: Confirm you are GST-registered and eligible
Only businesses registered under GST can claim ITC. Regular (non-Composition) scheme taxpayers qualify. Composition scheme registrants (typically small traders and manufacturers with turnover below ₹1.5 crore who pay a flat-rate GST) cannot claim ITC on any purchase. Service providers below the ₹20 lakh registration threshold are not GST-registered and therefore cannot claim ITC — though voluntary registration is an option. Freelancers and consultants providing OIDAR (Online Information and Database Access or Retrieval) services internationally are required to register regardless of turnover. See also our guide on laptop warranty and grey market risks — grey market purchases often do not come with a proper GST invoice, making ITC claims impossible.
Step 2: Ensure the invoice meets GST requirements
A tax invoice from a registered supplier must include: the supplier's GSTIN (15-digit GST Identification Number), the HSN code for laptops (8471), the quantity and value, and the CGST + SGST (or IGST for inter-state purchases) amounts shown separately. Online marketplaces like Flipkart and Amazon operate as registered suppliers and issue compliant invoices — download and retain the GST invoice (not just the order confirmation) at the time of purchase. Retail shops must also issue GST invoices; if a shop offers a "without bill discount" that avoids GST, you lose the ITC benefit — and the discount rarely equals 18%.
Step 3: Verify the credit appears in your GSTR-2B
GSTR-2B is an auto-populated monthly statement that shows all the ITC available to you based on what your suppliers have filed. If a supplier does not file their GSTR-1 (their outward supply return), the invoice will not appear in your GSTR-2B and you cannot legally claim that ITC under current GST rules. For laptop purchases from established retailers or e-commerce platforms, this is rarely an issue — they file regularly. For smaller shops, verify by checking GSTR-2B after the purchase period closes.
Step 4: Apportion if the laptop has mixed use
If the laptop is used 80% for business and 20% for personal use, you can claim only 80% of the ITC under Section 17(1) of the CGST Act. Maintain records of business use if scrutiny arises. For a sole proprietor whose laptop is primarily a business tool, a reasonable business-use claim is defensible — but "I use it only for business" should reflect reality, because a tax officer may ask for evidence.
When to call a laptop repair service (and what it costs)
When DIY ends
If your business laptop needs repair, ensure you ask for a GST invoice. Repair services from registered service providers attract 18% GST on the service charges — and this is claimable as ITC for registered businesses. A ₹5,000 motherboard repair bill carries ₹763 of GST — claimable. Our repair service issues GST-compliant invoices on request.
Typical repair cost in India
Screen replacement: ₹3,500–₹8,000. Battery replacement: ₹1,200–₹4,500. Motherboard repair: ₹2,500–₹12,000. All attract 18% GST on the service component. Doorstep visit is ₹149.
A note from the LRW Engineer Team
We see business customers regularly lose ITC benefits by buying from cash-only retailers who do not file GSTR-1, or by purchasing refurbished laptops from unregistered vendors. Always insist on a proper tax invoice with GSTIN. The ₹10,000–₹15,000 ITC on a mid-range business laptop is real money — more than the cost of a laptop repair, and it comes back to your business every purchase cycle.
