Why Asus laptops stop turning on — the six root causes
When an Asus laptop refuses to power on, there are six fault categories that account for almost every case. By frequency: dead or depleted battery (~40%), faulty charger or DC/USB-C jack (~25%), Power IC or MOSFET failure on the motherboard (~15%), RAM seating issue after a drop (~10%), BIOS corruption after a failed Windows update (~5%), and liquid damage short circuit (~5%). Work through them in this order — cheapest and easiest first, board-level last.
Six self-checks before calling a technician
Work through these in order. Each one takes under two minutes and eliminates a cause before you move to the next.
Step 1 — Hold the power button for 30 seconds
This is the single most-skipped fix, and it works more often than it should. Every Asus laptop has an Embedded Controller (EC) — a small chip that manages power sequencing, fan speed, battery charging, and the power button itself. After a power surge, a flat battery discharge, or a Windows crash, the EC can enter a locked state where pressing power does nothing at all.
To reset it: disconnect the charger, hold the power button firmly for 30 seconds, release it, reconnect the charger, then press power normally. This drains all residual charge from the motherboard capacitors and forces the EC to restart from a clean state. On ROG and TUF gaming models, this is the single most effective first step — the EC on gaming laptops manages more power rails than on consumer models and is correspondingly more prone to locking up after load spikes.
Step 2 — Try on charger only, without the battery
If your Asus has a removable bottom panel, disconnect the battery (unplug the ribbon connector from the motherboard) and try booting purely on mains power. If the laptop starts without the battery, the battery has failed completely — the charging IC on the board is likely fine. This is a ₹1,500–₹4,000 battery replacement, not a motherboard repair.
On sealed models where removing the battery requires opening the chassis, skip to Step 3 and come back to this if the charger LED check is inconclusive. See our full guide on Asus laptop battery replacement costs in India for what to expect.
Step 3 — Check the charger LED and listen for fan behaviour
Plug the charger in and watch the LED on the laptop body. On most VivoBook and ZenBook models there is a small white or amber dot near the charging port. If that LED is completely dark even with a known-good charger plugged in, the fault is almost certainly in the charging path — either the charger itself, the DC jack (barrel connector), or the USB-C charging port. DC jack repair is a board-level solder job that costs ₹800–₹2,500 depending on the connector type.
Now press power and listen. Three distinct patterns tell you different things. If the fan spins for one or two seconds then everything stops and the screen stays dark, this is a POST failure (Power-On Self-Test) — the machine detects a hardware problem and shuts down immediately as a safety measure. The most common cause is a faulty or dislodged RAM stick. If the fan runs continuously but the screen stays dark, look at Step 5 for the display-output possibility. If there is no fan movement, no LED, and no sound at all, the fault is upstream of the fan controller — Power IC or a fused power rail.
Step 4 — Inspect the charging port for physical damage
Look at the charging port under a light. VivoBook models still use a round barrel connector; ZenBook, ROG Flow, and newer TUF models charge via USB-C. Both are vulnerable in specific ways.
On barrel connectors, the centre pin inside the port can bend inward, breaking contact. You will often feel a slight wobble when you insert the charger tip. On USB-C ports, the connector can develop loose solder joints at the board attachment points from repeated plug-and-unplug cycles or from dropping the laptop while the cable is plugged in. A bent or damaged port is a technician repair — do not insert objects to straighten the pin, as this almost always breaks it further. A note on VivoBook USB-C charging: not all VivoBook USB-C ports support power delivery. Only specific VivoBook 14/15 models from 2022 onward have charging-capable USB-C — using the wrong port produces a connected LED but no actual charge. Check your model's specification sheet on the Asus India support page to confirm.
Step 5 — One-RAM-stick test on dual-SODIMM models
VivoBook 15 (X1502, M1502), VivoBook 16 (M1603), and several TUF Gaming models have two RAM slots (SODIMMs — the removable memory cards inside the laptop). If the fan spins then stops (as described in Step 3), a faulty or incorrectly seated RAM stick is a likely cause.
Open the bottom panel, remove one RAM stick, and try booting with only the remaining stick in slot 1. If the laptop boots, the removed stick or its slot has a fault — try the removed stick alone in slot 1 to determine which. RAM replacement costs ₹1,500–₹4,500 depending on the capacity and speed (DDR4 vs DDR5). Many models with soldered RAM (including ZenBook 14 OLED and ZenBook Duo series) do not have accessible SODIMM slots — if your laptop has no visible RAM slots after opening the base, this step does not apply.
Step 6 — BIOS recovery after a failed Windows update
A Windows update that installs a firmware component, or a manual BIOS update that gets interrupted by a power cut, can corrupt the BIOS chip. The machine powers on but shows absolutely nothing — no logo, no splash screen, no cursor. The keyboard backlight may come on briefly then go off.
Asus ROG and ZenBook models from 2020 onward support BIOS Flashback recovery without needing a working screen. The process: download the correct BIOS file for your exact model from the Asus India support page, rename it as the model requires (check the support page — it differs by series), copy it to a USB drive formatted as FAT32, insert the USB, and hold F2 on power-on. The system will detect the BIOS file and reflash automatically. On older VivoBook models, hold F2 on boot to enter the BIOS recovery menu. If BIOS recovery does not resolve a no-boot situation after following the Asus recovery procedure exactly, the fault has moved from software to hardware — the BIOS chip itself or a Power IC may need chip-level repair.
Model-specific quirks that look like power failures
Some Asus-specific behaviours mimic a dead laptop but are actually something else. Knowing these saves unnecessary diagnosis time.
ROG and TUF: Armoury Crate power-button lockout
Armoury Crate, the Asus system management software on gaming models, has a setting that can reassign or disable the power button for Scenario Profiles (for example, a profile that triggers on a gaming session). If this setting gets activated and the software crashes or the profile state becomes corrupted, the power button stops working entirely even though the machine is hardware-functional. The EC reset (Step 1 above — 30 seconds of holding power) breaks the software lock because it forces the EC to reinitialise from defaults. After booting, clear the Armoury Crate profile or uninstall and reinstall the application if the problem recurs.
ZenBook Duo: ScreenPad Plus confusion
The ZenBook Duo has a second display — the ScreenPad Plus — below the keyboard. When the main display has a backlight fault or the display output gets redirected, the laptop may actually boot successfully and be fully operational while showing everything on the ScreenPad Plus. The main screen looks dark, giving the impression the laptop is off. Before opening any service ticket on a ZenBook Duo, look at the secondary screen. If you see a Windows desktop or a cursor there, the laptop is on — you have a display routing or main-screen backlight issue, not a power fault. Connect an external monitor via HDMI to confirm.
TUF Gaming: MUX switch black screen on boot
TUF Gaming and ROG models with a MUX switch (a hardware switch in BIOS that routes display output between the integrated GPU and the discrete GPU) can produce a solid black screen on boot if the switch is set incorrectly for your display connection. This most commonly happens after a BIOS reset to defaults. Enter BIOS by holding F2 on power-on — if the BIOS screen appears on an external monitor but not the internal display, load BIOS defaults and recheck the MUX switch setting under the GPU or Advanced tab.
When to stop and call a technician
There are four situations where continuing to troubleshoot at home will make things worse rather than better. Stop immediately if: the machine still shows no power response after all six steps above; you detect a burning smell or see scorch marks on the motherboard or near the charging port; the bottom panel or keyboard area feels warm despite no boot activity (indicating a short circuit drawing current); or you suspect liquid has entered the chassis. Liquid damage short circuits corrode board traces within hours if the machine is powered on in a wet state — a power attempt after a spill can kill components that were previously still functional. For confirmed or suspected liquid damage, read our guide on laptop liquid damage repair and do not attempt to power on.
A ₹149 diagnostic visit by a technician gives you a confirmed fault and a quoted repair cost before any work begins. Our No Fix No Fee policy means if the fault cannot be resolved, you owe nothing beyond the diagnostic fee.

What the repair process looks like
If you bring or courier your Asus laptop to us after the self-checks above, here is what happens. The technician starts with a full diagnostic under a microscope for board-level issues, a multimeter for voltage rail checks, and an external display connection to isolate display from power faults. Most faults are confirmed within 30–45 minutes. We then call or WhatsApp you with the fault and a fixed-price quote before touching any part.
For motherboard chip-level repairs (Power IC, MOSFET, BIOS chip), the typical turnaround is one to two working days. For DC jack, battery, and RAM replacements, same-day or next-morning completion is standard. Every repair carries a 30-day warranty on both parts and labour. See our detailed Asus laptop repair guide for India for a broader overview of all service types.
If the diagnosis reveals a power IC failure on top of liquid damage on top of a corroded battery connector — compounding faults that push the repair cost above 40–50% of the laptop's current resale value — we will tell you that honestly too, along with the secondhand market context, so you can make an informed decision rather than putting money into a machine that may have another fault surface in three months. See our Asus motherboard repair cost guide for what chip-level work typically involves.
A note from the LRW Engineer Team
The most common mistake we see with Asus no-power calls is owners skipping the EC reset (Step 1) because it sounds too simple, then spending days trying increasingly complex things. The EC lockup on ROG and TUF models is genuine and common — a 30-second hold has resolved around one in five of the no-power calls we receive on gaming Asus laptops. Try it first. If your Asus laptop still will not start after all six steps, WhatsApp us at 7702503336 with your model number and a description of what happens when you press power — we can often narrow the fault category before you even visit.
