Short answer: A wide-gamut display (at least 100% sRGB, ideally 90%+ DCI-P3), a fast CPU for RAW processing (Intel Core i7 14th gen, AMD Ryzen 7 7000-series, or Apple M3/M4), 32 GB RAM for studio-grade workflows, and a fast NVMe SSD (Gen 4, not Gen 3) are the four pillars. The display is non-negotiable — no amount of CPU speed compensates for editing on a panel with a narrow colour gamut, because every correction you apply will export differently than what you see.
How to choose a photo studio laptop — 4 buying angles
Step 1: Display — sRGB, DCI-P3, and why they matter
Photography editing lives and fails by the display. The sRGB colour space (standard red-green-blue — the baseline for web, social media, and most print labs) requires 100% coverage. The wider DCI-P3 space (used in cinema and increasingly in modern social platforms) requires 90%+ coverage for professional work. A panel covering only 72% sRGB — common in budget machines — will clip deep reds, saturated yellows, and certain skin tones, meaning images that look correct on your screen will appear desaturated elsewhere. Check the display specification carefully, not just the marketing headline.

Lightroom Classic's intelligent previews and batch export are strongly CPU-bound tasks. An Intel Core i7 14th gen or AMD Ryzen 7 7745H handles most professional workflows. The Apple M3 Pro and M4 Pro chips have a significant advantage in Lightroom, Capture One, and Photoshop — Apple's unified memory architecture (where CPU and GPU share the same high-bandwidth memory pool) means less data shuffling and faster preview rendering. For 24–36 MP cameras, 16 GB RAM is sufficient. For 45–61 MP studio cameras (Sony A7R V, Nikon Z8), 32 GB is the practical minimum for comfortable culling of large sessions.
Step 3: Ports — tethering and SD card speed
A photo studio laptop must have a fast SD card slot — UHS-II speed (up to 312 MB/s read) is dramatically faster than the UHS-I slots (up to 104 MB/s) that most budget laptops include.
