Satellite fan assemblies use a sleeve-bearing or ball-bearing design that degrades over 8–10 years into audible grinding, then intermittent stalling. Toshiba’s EcoMode and Tempro utilities set the fan ramp curve — if the fan bearing is worn but still turning, the thermals may look acceptable in software while the CPU briefly reaches throttle temperatures on workload spikes. Dust accumulation in the fin stack compounds this: the Satellite chassis routes all exhaust through a single rear vent, and on 15.6”–17.3” models the fin stack depth means even modest dust build-up cuts airflow substantially. Fan failure on a 10-year-old Satellite will accelerate capacitor ageing on the motherboard.
