DC barrel-jack solder shear is a well-documented failure mode on the Toshiba Satellite series. The through-hole jack is soldered to the motherboard PCB, but on the 2012–2018 generation the hinge flex transferred mechanical stress directly to the solder joints whenever the lid was lifted at an angle. Over time the joints develop micro-fractures — intermittent charging (works if the cable is held at a specific angle) is the first symptom, followed by complete charging failure. On a 10-year-old laptop, the solder joints may also suffer corrosion fatigue even without mechanical stress. Some Satellite models routed the barrel jack on a daughterboard connected by a short ribbon — these are a simpler cable swap; PCB-mounted versions require BGA-adjacent rework.
We begin with a visual inspection under magnification to distinguish between a hairline solder crack (reflowing restores the joint), physical barrel deformation (replacement needed), and a failed charging IC on the motherboard (different diagnosis path).
