Legacy Toshiba Satellites shipped with mechanical HDDs (2.5” SATA, 5400–7200 RPM) for most of their production run; only late-era models included SSDs. A 10-year-old HDD is statistically well beyond its rated mean-time-between-failures. Failure signals include slow boot times and freezes (read errors on system files), clicking or grinding noises (head actuator failure), or complete no-detection. The good news is that HDD data is often partially or fully recoverable even when the drive is not bootable — as long as the platters are not physically scored. Do not run chkdsk or disk recovery utilities on a clicking drive; every additional spin worsens the damage.
