Satellite keyboard failures typically take one of two forms: individual key switches wearing out on heavily used keys (Space, Enter, Backspace) or a liquid-exposure event that causes multiple keys to become sticky, unresponsive, or to ghost. The 2010–2020 Satellite line used a snap-fit scissor mechanism with a rubber dome membrane — after many years the membrane loses elasticity, giving keys a mushy, inconsistent feel before they stop registering. Unlike the Portege series, Satellite keyboards are not spill-resistant, so even a small spill that dries unseen can leave mineral deposits bridging key contacts. Replacement keyboards must match the exact generation since connector pitch and backlight ribbon variants changed between major chassis revisions.
